  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kiwi Readaholic -- Maybe if you're into Nancy Drew... : If I was about 15 years old I might like the "Nancy DreW" style of the intrepid young news hounds chsing the story. The youngfemale lead was almost tolerable but her whiny male counterpart was unbearable. And this seems to be a recurring theme in McDermid's books. Some might call it pro-feminist, otheres might call it emasculating. I thought it was all more like Young Adult fiction targetted to female girls. I couldn't finish it - caved at about 40%. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ceal S. -- JMJ - what a bore : I’ve always loved Val McDermid but lockdown has done her head in. I’m on page 216 and heavens, is it boring and all over the place ... doesn’t McDermid have an editor? This is dull beyond belief, I’ve only persisted this long praying that it will perk up, but nae, I think I need to donate it to Goodwill or something and find something better to read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. Simons -- Great start to a new series : Val McDermid is a master at her craft. Allie Burns is a terrific character and it will be exciting to see where she and her cohorts go. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Josephine M Moore -- Gripping : I have read all of Ms. McDermid’s Tony and Carol series and was very excited about a new character. Enter Allison Burns. Newspaper reporter extraordinaire and her fight to bring the “bad guys” to justice. Wonderful characters, lots of action, and a wonderful story make this another of Val McDermid’s must read books! Enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cheryl Ann -- Excellent read! : Val McDermid continues to write fantastic novels. This is a new character, a journalist, and it takes place in 1979. True to the times and this is a character that I will follow. I highly recommend it. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Hard to put down — get it, read it! : Exciting to visit 1979 Glasgow as a young woman reporter starts her new job at the local newspaper and there is never a dull moment. And mayhem and murder. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from HWW -- One of her best : 5 stars for a beautifully written book, meticulously written and researched. I have not in recent memory read and enjoyed a better book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from amcalm -- Great start for a new series : I’ve been reading McDermid's books for 20-ish years and this one feels like a great start to a new series. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Paris -- Not her best : As with many of her recent books, I had pre-ordered Val McDermid’s latest and was delighted when it arrived. A short lived delight, though: this reads far more like her very early ,considerably less accomplished writing, in style, plot and character. There are clunky descriptions, of people and events, a slow-burning (almost static) plot and characters who simply do not ring true. I do hope that this might be a pandemic mis-step rather than a new direction for an author I have regarded with admiration for some time. This is so far from the Carol Jordan/Tony Hill books, or the Karen Pirie series that it really does read like a different writer. The plot dragged so much in the early to middle parts that it was only VM’s name that kept me reading. Had it been by an unknown, I think I’d have abandoned it at that stage. I had no investment in the characters, who seemed stereotypical and the storylines followed by the two main protagonists seemed only slightly sketched out. Given that VM’s other main characters have been police officers, it was interesting, if somewhat trite, that the journalists found them collectively dull, horrendously bigoted and quite dim. If I recall, journalists in her police procedurals are considered amoral if not immoral. Is it a bit easy to ascribe stereotypical views in this way? • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Yawn : I struggled through the first half of this because I was expecting it to get tense and exciting at some point. After all, when the cover blurb states, 'She's hunting for a story. And someone's hunting her.', you do expect someone to start hunting 'her' but they don't! A bit Nancy Drew with a clumsy murder thrown in. Bring back Karen Pirie! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jude Wright -- Scotland in 1979 with a dash of Witney Party 7! : Now I’m a massive fan of Val McDermid (should be DAME Val McDermid in my option!) , so I was hugely looking forward to reading 1979…. And boy, I was not to be disappointed! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 1, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Cariolina -- Readable : I love Val McDermid’s writing and had this on pre-order. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Only one disappointment… : This is a cracking read, one of Ms McDermid’s best since the Jordan and Hill series, (which I really miss.) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 23, 2021 )
